The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) has announced its 2017 award winners which includes chemists Zhongwei Chen and Mark Lautens. The RSC has also named its new Fellows (including Dennis Hall, Mario Leclerc, Stephen Loeb, Milica Radisic, Laurel Schafer, Frank Wania and Jiujun Zhang) and members of The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists (including Joule Bergerson, Frank Gu and Ute Kothe).

Summer 2017

Prime Minister Trudeau has announced Canada’s Chief Science Advisor, Mona Nemer, at a ceremony at the House of Commons. Nemer is a long-time member of the Canadian Society for Chemistry and obtained her PhD in bio-organic chemistry from McGill University.

Spring 2017

The 42nd annual Science Atlantic Chemistry Conference (ChemCon 2017) was held in St. John’s at Memorial University of Newfoundland May 4-6.The conference hosted more than 140 participants including undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals from academia and industry. Over the course of three days, students gave oral and poster presentations that showcased the diverse chemistry research happening in Atlantic Canada

The CIC would like to extend its condolences to the family of Norman H. Sagert of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who died April 19, 2017, at the age of 81.  Sagert is remembered for his warmth and modesty as well as his innovative solutions to chemical engineering in Nova Scotia.

The fifth annual Chemical Engineering Research Day, organized by the chemical engineering departments at McGill University and École Polytechnique de Montréal, was major success. The March 15 event contributed to the training, networking and visibility of graduate students, giving them the opportunity to mingle with colleagues and professionals.

Simon Fraser University, in conjunction with the Vancouver CIC Local Section, co-hosted the fourth annual Chemistry Career Night for SFU undergraduate students enrolled in at least one chemistry course. The students received advice on which career opportunities awaited them in the chemistry sector upon graduation.

The Department of Chemistry at York University in Toronto hosted the 45th Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC) this past March. It was the largest-ever SOUSCC, with more than 135 speakers and almost 200 delegates. Some included first-time participants from the University of Ottawa and Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont.

Spring 2017

This past March, the University of Toronto and the Chemical Institute of Canada co-hosted the annual Sector Info Night, inviting chemical engineering alumni from various areas of expertise to speak with undergraduates about their future career plans. This year’s speakers gave a brief presentation about their respective fields, which included: air quality control, environmental engineering, metallurgy, process engineering and consulting.
