Harald Stöver received his undergraduate training at the University Darmstadt, followed by his PhD in chemistry from the University of Ottawa in 1986, working alkali cation complexation with crown ethers with Christian Detellier. He subsequently carried out post-doctoral work in polymer chemistry with Jean Frechet at Cornell University, before starting in at the Department of Chemistry (since renamed to Chemistry and Chemical Biology) at McMaster University in 1989. Stöver held the NSERC/3M Industrial Research Chair in Polymers from 1998 to 2003, and is currently director of the NSERC CREATE Program on Extracellular Matrices.

Stöver’s interests center on the formation and properties of crosslinked polymers for fundamental and biomaterials appliation. He has published over 100 papers and leads an active research group.
