Nathalie Tufenkji is a professor of chemical engineering at McGill University and associate director of the Brace Center for Water Resources Management. She received a BEng in chemical engineering at McGill in 2000 and went on to complete a PhD in chemical and environmental engineering at Yale University, garnering two best dissertation awards – one institutional prize and one national prize. She holds the Canada Research Chair in Biocolloids and Surfaces and leads a research team working to solve interdisciplinary problems linked with protection of water resources, engineering of anti-microbial materials, and development of sustainable nanotechnology. Tufenkji received a 2012 Fulbright Scholar Award for tenure at Harvard University, the 2014 YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in Science and Technology, and in 2015, one of her innovations was shortlisted for the IChemE Global Sustainable Technology Award. This discovery showed the synergy of maple extracts with antibiotics in fighting infections, presenting an effective approach for decreasing antibiotic usage, and thus, slowing the spread of antibiotic resistance threatening global public health. Her research has garnered the attention of over 100 international media including The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde, and Oprah Magazine. She is an editorial board member for five scientific journals, has co-organized five major international conferences, and currently serves as the treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering.
