Juewen Liu is an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Waterloo. He is also affiliated with the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN). His current research involves biosensor development using DNA for target recognition. Liu earned his BSc from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2000 and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005 studying metal-dependent DNAzymes. After a postdoctoral research in New Mexico, he accepted his current position at the University of Waterloo in 2009.
The Liu lab performs combinatorial selection to isolate DNAzymes and aptamers, and is also interested in DNA adsorption by nanomaterials and lipid research. Liu has published more than one hundred peer-reviewed papers in the fields of analytical chemistry, surface science, bioinorganic chemistry and nanomedicine. These papers have received over 5000 citations. Liu received the Early Researcher Award from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation in 2011.
